Star Trek: Lighthouse - Season 2, Episode 3

Previously on Star Trek: Lighthouse

It's been a long few days since last episode. Ensign Oparu started working the Gamma shift, which means instead of starting work at a semi-normal time, she starts working at 18:00 or so and gets off at 0800 the next day.

Fun fact, in film, if you start work at 1800, and work past 2400, you just keep counting, because it's the same day. So I get to write fun things like 1800 - 3400 on my time sheet. w00t!

It's tough on everyone, because now that the Lighthouse is further into her mission, she employs a more staggered work schedule. Wynn has the morning shift, 0800-2100. Then the Cmdr (who has had a very grumpy week) comes in around 1100 and works until (frequently) 2500. Oparu starts last and works until after the sun has risen over the colony Sirius Three.

While the good Lt. Adjoury is off visiting the far away planet of Earth to watch the Yankees play baseball, the Lighthouse has a good natured, hippee Bolian that served with Ensign Oparu on her first assignment on the Legacy. Stache has a good attitude and spends much time trying to teach our young Ensign to listen, shut up and keep her head down.

The Cmdr has had a rotten week. Our Ensign is not sure of the details, but she is fairly certain between the amount of extra work being passed on by the Ambassador and moving further into deep space away from civilization is making her life much more difficult. Unfortunately for our Ensign, this means she takes a lot more abuse than she is used too. Her Betazoid psyche is woefully unprepared for the onslaught of Klingon PMS and stress. (Many of the fics written around this episode are highly angsty.)

The Ambassador is still being reclusive, though our Ensign remains hopeful. Most of the shipfic written is also angsty. The Ambassador continues to be unable to sort out her feelings, while the Ensign seems unable to put hers into perspective. Though she spends much of her limited free time trying to just find good ways to distract herself from the Ambassador, the Ensign is still completely undone by something as simple as a change of tone of voice or an actual, genuine smile.

In one scene, the Ensign confesses her apprehension about an upcoming cultural ritual they have to attend on Sirius Three. After a moment of thought, the Ambassador actually reads the Ensign's fear (fandom squees because usually the Ambassador epically FAILS at the emotions of others), and falls into a philosophic explanation of what the festival entails. The Ensign is completely smitten with this side of the T'coura, because it brings out her passion for things the way her normal duties do not.

The poor Ambassador is dreadfully overworked, however, and the moment of true passion is short lived. The Ambassador is stretched very thin because Lighthouse has made contact with the new planet of Damag, and she is opening trade negotiations with a new governor, Jefkin. He's less jovial then Governor Pascal, but he's very dedicated to his people.

One of the delegates, Viktor, recently abandoned his post on Sirius Three and left the fragile government struggling to replace him. He blames the Ambassador for his extreme dislike of the Federation's treatment of his planet. Ensign Oparu handles the communique and it makes her somewhat apprehensive, because for a moment she has doubts that the Ambassador might actually behave as Viktor suggests she does.

In the climax of this week's episode, many small trade routes go astray and our Ensign fears briefly she may loose her position. Abruptly the Cmdr's extremely foul mood dispates and things return to normal on the Lighthouse. At least, until next week.

On the eve of Sirius Three's harvest festival (in which Ensign Oparu must play a crucial part), Sirius Three is approached by the Dominion, who wish to open trade negotiations with the small planet.
