Star Trek: Lighthouse "Ways and Means"
Star Trek: Lighthouse, Season 2, episode 2
We open the episode in Ensign Oparu's new quarters. Her sonic shower isn't working and we watch her contemplate the ancient innovation of the bathtub in the large washroom she shares with another Ensign. Deciding she can just quite figure this out, she is throughly wet when she is summoned by communicator.
Lt. Adjoury's voice fills the room. "Ensign, how would you like to start your day with a shuttle run?"
Sighing, Oparu listens as she is filled in on her mission. Instead of heading to the bridge for her shift, she will be heading down to the shuttle bay, and then out to the far away outpost of EA games. After procuring a piece of the trade agreement there, she will proceed to the trading outpost known as Costco to continuing her search for the precious commodity of "Rockband".
Her first flight is unremarkable, we watch her shuttle sail through the many layers of security surrounding the secretive outpost of EA games. When she reaches the busy outpost of Costco we see that she does not have enough currency to purchase "Rockband". Returning to the Lighthouse, Oparu is given another mission more urgent than "Rockband". She must pick up a delegate from where his freighter left him at the outpost YVR and bring him back to the ship.
The delegate is a surprisingly young man, who wishes to talk to Oparu mainly about his sexual exploits and the many perks of his position. She brings him to the ship and continues her search for "Rockband." When the outposts of Best Buy and Wal-Mart both fail to have the commodity, she finally finds it at HMV. Returning to the Lighthouse, with Rockband, two wireless guitars and a Playstation in BIG FRAKKING BAG (courtesy of
miriel), she finds she has returned just in time to return the young delegate to his home planet.
His home planet is light years from the Lighthouse's course, but Oparu is the pilot of the day. After shuttling the delegate home, she returns to the ship.
Her work station collects many data padds and pieces of trade based detrius while she is away and Vice Admiral Duraeshahvar is annoyed at how cluttered it looks. Oparu is now under orders to keep her work station absolutely pristene.
Oparu is deeply frustrated because NO ONE else has to do this. Commander Barba (who's desk is a MESS, and who likes to stack things on Oparu's desk while she's out shuttling) and Lt. Adjoury (who is naturally neat) are both allowed to keep things as they like them.
Ambassador T'Coura Pel radios up from Sirius Three and wants Ensign Oparu to organize a shipment of coffee (an extremely valuable trading commodity that only the Lighthouse can provide in large quantities) for the natives, who are restless today. The illustrious Ambassador has also forgotten to approve the Ensign's work report from the previous week and her weekly stipend of credits will be delayed until next week. Commander Barba believes this is Oparu's fault until the engineer points out that Oparu did indeed turn in her work report on time.
Wynn reminds Oparu kindly that yes, being the helm office is a thankless exhausting job.
An extremely fast-talking Bolian trader arrives to collect an advance on her wages as a contractor on Sirius Three. She is frustrated because the trader on this route before her was getting paid more. Commander Barba and Ambassador T'Coura discuss this in hushed voices over comm traffic while Oparu entertains the Bolian.
Lt. Adjoury's shift ends and she disappears to her quarters. Commander Barba is buried in her work, but she still finds time to chastise Oparu for not being neater and not getting things done for her bridge work during the day. Oparu does not mention that she WAS SHUTTLING ALL DAY and therefore cannot get everything done. Barba reminds Oparu that Adjoury is her favorite.
Oparu agrees because the Bajoran, Adjoury Wynn is much neater, more organized and allowed to be much more self-sufficient than Ensign Oparu.
A visiting trader snaps at Oparu because she has been too busy to even replicate dinner.
Commander Barba remains on the bridge long after her shift has ended. Which prevents Oparu from being able play the music she likes on the bridge, or slouch in her chair. Oparu spends three hours sorting isolinear chips by hand because the supply ships are very short on isolinear chips and Lighthouse will have to reuse old chips.
The only bright spot in this episode is when Ambassador T'coura radios the helm just to ask Oparu to check her office for a green ceremonial jack she believes she's left there. It is not there, but the Ambassador's voice is soft and she calls Oparu 'sweetheart'.
Contented, Oparu returns to her quarters 14 hours after leaving them, without taking a break for supper but too tired to care at this moment.
Next Episode: Oparu switches from Beta shift to Gamma shift.
